Chapter Five

The Museum Center was packed. The black tie affair wasn’t something Nathan was normally comfortable with. He was more comfortable doing a survivor course in the mud and rain.

Nathan couldn’t believe he was auctioning himself off for charity. He tried to remember that it was all for the domestic violence shelter as he stood in line on the stage. He couldn’t help being a little bit frightened of the crowd. Seth London was MC’ing the event with his family. The ballroom was packed with lots of single females wanting to buy a cop’s attention for the weekend. Nathan feigned boredom as the rest of his SWAT buddies hammed it up for the crowd. The bidding went high and even higher as they went through the team. Finally, it was Nathan’s turn.

“Last, but of course not least, we have Detective Nathan Stow. Some of his favorite pastimes are mountain biking, rock climbing, and dancing.”

There was an audible murmur that went through the crowd when Seth paused. Nathan did as the rest of his coworkers and walked the stage. When he got to the end of the long catwalk, he spread his arms wide and did a little circle. The crowd went crazy.

“Let’s start the bidding at a hundred dollars,” Seth said.

The low lighting of the ballroom didn’t give Nathan a clear view of the audience. The numbered paddles in the front started to fly up, but one in the back continued to outbid the ladies in the front. Nathan couldn’t see the bidder in the back of the room. The person continued to outbid the ladies in the front.

The bidding got heated. One of the women in front wasn’t willing to give up. The bidder in the back continued to bid without hesitation. Before Nathan knew what was happening, his price was over a grand. The highest bidder would win an evening with Nathan.

“Going once, going twice…sold to bidder number one-three-seven in the back! You can pay and meet Nathan in the Rosebud ballroom,” Seth said.

The gavel dropped.

Everyone clapped. Nathan stepped off stage, heading down the middle aisle toward the back of the ballroom. He searched the audience for the woman who purchased him for the evening. No one was making a claim for him as he walked down the aisle. At the end of the aisle, Reed stood off to the side. He was giving Nathan a hard stare that so many law enforcement officers knew how to do. Had he purchased him?

Reed turned away, heading for the Rosebud ballroom.

The Rosebud ballroom was across the hallway from the ballroom they were holding the auction. Nathan scanned the area, trying to find the bidder who won him for the evening. All of Nathan’s breath left him when he saw that Reed had been the highest bidder. Their eyes met and something predatory vibrated through Reed’s eyes. He quickly looked away as he pulled his wallet from his coat pocket. He pealed hundred dollar bills from his wallet, dropping them as he counted them onto the table.
